Arabian Nights 2 Previews Part 4 June 18, 2010

There are three things I loved about Arabian Nights in particular. One, it has by far the best flavor. “Arabian Nights” is stylish, recognizable, and we can relate to it. Two, it has real world references. Three, it has fun wacky abilities. I think that all three of these characteristics can be found in the three Arabian Nights 2 land cards I will show today. (more…)

The power creep continues to make Magic cards more powerful. I will be suggesting what cards I think we could be seeing any time now due to the fact that cards are getting more powerful and will continue to do so. These cards could appear in Magic 2011, and I expect to see them before Magic 2020. (more…)
Critique of “New” Magic the Gathering & Rise of Eldrazi April 16, 2010
Posted by James in : all, random, theory, reviews, previews, design , 6comments
From Onslaught to Eventide was a golden age for Magic. The sets were extraordinarily very well balanced and fun for drafting and other limited events. Shards of Alara, Magic 2010, and Zendikar missed the mark. What about Rise of Eldrazi? I will examine the design flaws of each of these sets and give my first impressions for Rise of Eldrazi. (more…)

Gold from Rise of Eldrazi Part 1 March 31, 2010
Posted by James in : all, fake cards, reviews, previews, speculation , 4comments
Rise of the Eldrazi has shown that Wizards of the Coast likes Dungeons & Dragons. Levels will make Magic the Gathering a little more like Dungeons & Dragons, but a key component is still missing: Money. Gold counters are the perfect solution to the lack of money in the Magic universe. Gold counters are basically gold pieces or gold coins. You use them to buy things. (more…)
Rise of the Eldrazi: Leveling Up Inspired by a Fan? March 26, 2010
Posted by James in : all, fake cards, reviews, previews, speculation , add a comment
In November 2007 a member of the Magic Set Editor community, moxydotorg, developed a Magic template for what he called the “hero’s format,” which is loosely based on Elder Dragon Highlander. (Pichoro improved upon the template.) The main idea was to have a main character that could “level up” similar to RPG games. (more…)
Rise of the Eldrazi: Colorless Non-Artifact Creatures (I Invented Them First!) March 4, 2010

I suspected that we might end up seeing colorless non-artifact creatures after seeing Eye of Ugin. I suggested the idea on facebook but I was told that it was pretty unlikely and I agreed. (more…)
“Nix”: A Landless Magic Set February 17, 2010

We already know what Magic will look like in 2060 and 2070. Now I know what Magic will look like in 2063. This is the year that Magic will develop the all 0 casting cost set. They tried an all gold set in 2009. They tried an all land set in 2017. The time will come for a 0 casting cost set. No lands will be required to play Magic. (more…)

If you thought Magic 2010 was a money grab, then you have yet to see Zendikar, the biggest money grab I’ve seen since Urza’s Saga.
Zendikar comes out in a little less than a month, and we already know a lot about it. I don’t think the official previews have even started, but that’s not stopping anyone. Take a look here to see the incomplete Zendikar spoiler.

Magic 2010 Review Part 3: Top 14 New Cards for Standard July 14, 2009

Update (7-17-2009): Added Honor the Pure and dual lands to the list
The point of this review is to take a look at the best new cards in Magic 2010 for Standard (that we don’t already have in Standard). For example, we already have Ajani Goldmane and Birds of Paradise, so they aren’t worth mentioning. Essence Scatter also doesn’t count because it’s the same thing as Remove Soul. However, the card could be a reprint that we simply haven’t seen for a while. (more…)
Magic 2010 Review Part 2: Second Picks July 8, 2009
Posted by James in : all, reviews, previews, strategy, tips, limited, draft, sealed , 6comments
Second picks are a notch under first picks. They are cards that are sometimes worth taking as a first pick in a draft. It is important to know what cards are considered to be second picks because every card in your deck isn’t going to be a bomb or a first pick when playing in a draft or sealed deck tournament. Taking a close look at the second picks can help you decide what colors to play, and it will help you take the best cards in a draft. I will only discuss the common and uncommon second picks because you can’t count on getting good rares in a limited event. (more…)
