rise of the eldrazi

I suspected that we might end up seeing colorless non-artifact creatures after seeing Eye of Ugin. I suggested the idea on facebook but I was told that it was pretty unlikely and I agreed. (more…)

Worldwake Review Part 2: First Picks (Limited) January 28, 2010

Posted by James in : all, reviews, strategy, tips, limited, draft, sealed , 2comments

In order to prepare for the pre-release, it might help to consider which commons and uncommons you want. When you see these it can help you decide what colors to play. I call the best commons and uncommons “first picks” because they will tend to be the first cards you take during a draft. Here are my favorite 8 commons and uncommons: (more…)

Worldwake Review Part 1: Bombs (Limited) January 27, 2010

Posted by James in : all, reviews, strategy, tips, limited , add a comment

The spoiler is now done and we already have pictures of the best draft/sealed bombs. Shards of Alara, M10, and Zendikar all seemed to allow bombs to affect the game to an extraordinary extent, and Worldwake has continued this trend. A “bomb” in my mind is a card that could pretty much win by itself. Here are my favorite eight bombs in Worldwake. (more…)

Worldwake: First Impressions January 25, 2010

Posted by James in : all, reviews , 2comments

The spoiler is almost done and we are about 5 days away from the prerelease for Worldwake. I will take a look at the new abilities and some of my favorite cards. What do I think so far? The problem with Zendikar was that the commons and uncommons tended to be pretty unimpressive. That is not the case here. I am glad to see some great commons and uncommons for a change. This article contains spoilers. (more…)

Historical Progress of Magic November 16, 2009

We experience a lot of progress in our personal lives. We evolve from someone willing to touch fire and walk into traffic into a much more reasonable kind of person. Society also has progress when it comes to technological improvements. What about Magic? Is Magic better now than it used to be? Consider the following points: (more…)

Why I hate Fetch Lands November 3, 2009

Posted by James in : all, random, reviews, design , 13comments

When Revised was around, I decided that I should sell my dual lands for $5 each. They were worth too much money. Then when Ravnica came out the shock duals were worth around $20. That was pure insanity, and we had little choice but get them to play Magic because Ravnica was all about multicolor decks! (more…)

Drafting Zendikar Part 1: First Picks October 5, 2009

Posted by James in : all, reviews, strategy, tips, limited, draft , 6comments

When drafting Zendikar, you will want to decide which colors to play mostly depending on what cards are passed to you. If the rare isn’t extremely powerful, such as a Sorin Markov, you will have to depend on the commons and uncommons, which is 99% of the time. Even if your first pick is a Soren, you need good black cards to be passed to you in order to play him. Here are my 12 favorite common and uncommon first picks found in Zendikar: (more…)

Zendikar Review Part 3: Extended September 30, 2009

Posted by James in : all, reviews, previews, speculation , 5comments

Zendikar’s rares are among the most powerful we have seen in a while. Some of them might even be good enough for extended tournaments. Although I’m not really sure which of these cards will be best in extended, here are my top 5 favorites: (more…)

Planechase: First Impressions September 9, 2009

planechase
Planechase is the new informal way to play Magic. You get a free Plane card in play. It is supposed to be a location that the players are at, and it functions as an enchant wold. Players can roll dice to try to change the plane or get the triggered ability of the plane. It is a lot like Nightmare Magic, a way to play Magic I invented some time ago. (more…)

Zendikar: First Impressions September 6, 2009

If you thought Magic 2010 was a money grab, then you have yet to see Zendikar, the biggest money grab I’ve seen since Urza’s Saga.

Zendikar comes out in a little less than a month, and we already know a lot about it. I don’t think the official previews have even started, but that’s not stopping anyone. Take a look here to see the incomplete Zendikar spoiler.

Magic 2010 Review Part 3: Top 14 New Cards for Standard July 14, 2009

Posted by James in : all, reviews, previews, strategy, constructed , add a comment

Update (7-17-2009): Added Honor the Pure and dual lands to the list

The point of this review is to take a look at the best new cards in Magic 2010 for Standard (that we don’t already have in Standard). For example, we already have Ajani Goldmane and Birds of Paradise, so they aren’t worth mentioning. Essence Scatter also doesn’t count because it’s the same thing as Remove Soul. However, the card could be a reprint that we simply haven’t seen for a while. (more…)

Magic 2010 Review Part 2: Second Picks July 8, 2009

Posted by James in : all, reviews, previews, strategy, tips, limited, draft, sealed , 6comments

Second picks are a notch under first picks. They are cards that are sometimes worth taking as a first pick in a draft. It is important to know what cards are considered to be second picks because every card in your deck isn’t going to be a bomb or a first pick when playing in a draft or sealed deck tournament. Taking a close look at the second picks can help you decide what colors to play, and it will help you take the best cards in a draft. I will only discuss the common and uncommon second picks because you can’t count on getting good rares in a limited event. (more…)
