Standard Red Deck Wins (With Return to Ravnica) December 13, 2012

Posted by James in : all, strategy, constructed, standard , trackback

I believe introduction of Return to Ravnica has made Red Deck Wins a much better deck. I stopped playing Red Deck Wins after Zendikar left and started to play again (at least once each week) right after Return to Ravnica came out. I don’t win every match, but I don’t think any deck can do that right now anyway. My current deck and sideboard are the following:

Deck

  • 4x Gore-House Chainwalker
  • 4x Rakdos Cackler
  • 4x Thundermaw Dragon
  • 4x Stromkirk Noble
  • 4x Stonewright
  • 4x Ash Zealot
  • 4x Hellrider
  • 2x Mizzium Mortars
  • 1x Hellion Crucible
  • 4x Brimstone Volley
  • 2x Pyreheart Wolf

Sideboard

  • 4x Pillar of Flame
  • 2x Mizzium Mortars
  • 1x Pyreheart Wolf
  • 3x Thunderbolt
  • 3x Forge Devil
  • 2x Zealous Conscripts

How to Sideboard

When playing against a quick aggro deck, I often sideboard out 4 Thundermaw Dragon, 4 Brimstone Volley, and 2 lands. I then put in Pillar of Flame, Mizzium Mortars, Pyreheart Wolf, and whatever else seems helpful.

Many decks use creatures with 1 toughness and Forge Devil is great against those. Some decks use Angel of Revelation and Thunderbolt is put in against those.

Against control decks I often sideboard Brimstone Volley out, but Rakdos Cackler is another option against some decks. I usually sideboard Zealous Conscripts and Thunderbolt against control decks (or slower decks), but it depends what they have in the deck.

Possible Changes

Instead of using Pyreheart Wolf, Mizzium Mortars, and Stonewright, I used to play Pillar of Flame and Thunderous Wrath. Those are good cards, but I have not been tempted to go back to what it was. The new cards are quite good. I would consider playing even more Pyreheart Wolf cards.

Thundermaw Hellkite and 2 lands could be taken out to speed the deck up, but I like them a lot. Rakdos Cackler and Gorehouse Chainwalker might also be worth taking out for other cards.

I would consider putting Thunderous Wrath and Pillar of Flame back into the deck, but there’s not a lot of cards I like that aren’t already in the deck.
