How to Make Your Own Magic: The Gathering Set Part 5: Legendary Creatures November 6, 2012

What’s the point of legendary creatures? They originally existed to unite two colors and potentially combine the powers of both colors. Now we want them for EDH (Commander) generals that you can build a deck around and to give us entirely new and interesting abilities. We also want legendary creatures to be more interesting, fun, and powerful than creatures are generally. They often have two or more colors, but not always. They often have a high mana cost, but not always.

There are no precise rules to making legendary creatures, but we should aspire to make them as they were described above. In particular, they can be something to build a deck around in EDH with some sort of theme in mind, and they can have multiple colors that combine in order to create some all-new ability.

Perhaps the best example of a legendary creature that does all of these things well is Doran, the Seige Tower. It’s interesting, fun, and powerful. You can build an EDH deck around it with high toughness creatures in mind. Moreover, all three of its colors combine to do something new.

An example of a legendary creature of my own is Queen Mab:

Queen Mab has three ordinary abilities that work together well—flash, flying, and deathtouch. That means that you can use her as a surprise piece of removal against an attacking creature. However, she also has a unique ability based on a mix between a green Regrowth-style effect and a blue-black Memory Plunder effect. However, building a deck around her would not require any theme in particular.
