Top 10 Cards from Avacyn Restored (Review) May 5, 2012Posted by James in : all, reviews, strategy, constructed , trackback
This is a list of the cards that I like best considering the cards in isolation for various constructed formats — standard, legacy, vintage, and Commander (EDH). I generally will not predict that these cards will actually be played, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they are.
1. Temporal Mastery
I am concerned that Temporal Mastery will break Legacy in half because it seems like it would be too good with any deck running four Brainstorms and four Jace, the Mind Sculptors.
2. Cavern of Souls
There are tribal decks in every constructed format, and there’s almost no reason to throw as many of these in a tribal deck as possible.
3. Vexing Devil
Vexing Devil is one of the best red aggro creatures ever made, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it made it into certain vintage, legacy, modern, and standard mono red decks.
4. Tamiyo, The Moon Sage
Tamiyo seems like a decent planeswalker. I don’t know if this is good enough for standard, but it might be.
5. Griselbrand (EDH)
Griselbrand is one of the best giant black creatures ever made, and it’s among the top three mono-black generals in commander. I love mono black in commander, so this card is welcomed. Even if it’s not your general, it could be easy to throw on in a mono black commander deck anyway.
6. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight is a great general in commander, but red is generally a terrible color in that format. It would still be a great card to throw in certain multicolor commander decks.
7. Avacyn, Angel of Hope
I don’t think Avacyn, Angel of Hope is necessarily the best general for a mono white commander deck, but it’s a great card and is something I would certainly be tempted to use as a general. If it’s not a general, it could still fit into certain commander decks anyway.
Terminus will be in some Commander decks because it’s a wonderful mass removal spell that can get rid of all the generals without putting them back in the Command zone to be cast again. It’s a decent card without the Miracle cost, but it’s obviously much better if you can play it for the Miracle cost at a convenient moment.
9. Primal Surge
Primal Surge lets you play an entire deck for ten mana. That’s something worth building an all-permanent deck around (perhaps in standard) and I wouldn’t be surprised if some Commander decks end up with one of these in there.
10. Craterhoof Behemoth (EDH)
Craterhoof Behemoth is a great Commander card as long as you build around it. I expect this to show up in mono green Commander decks.
