10 Powerful Colorless Cards for Commander (EDH Tips & Strategy) January 18, 2012Posted by James in : all, strategy, tips, constructed , trackback
I have mentioned my 9 favorite cards for Commander, but there are several other great cards that should be in almost every deck. Here is a list of 10 cards that meet that criteria.
Tenth place: Skullclamp
Skullclamp doesn’t win the game right away like many other cards on this list, but it’s still banned in almost every format for a reason. It’s very good. Of course, you’ll probably want some token creatures in your deck that can be killed off to draw extra cards if you play with it.
Ninth place: Mimic Vat
Mimic Vat is good and it’s even better in multiplayer.
Eighth place: Lightning Greaves
Lightning Greaves is great if you’re playing big creatures. Attacking right away and shroud are both very important abilities.
Seventh place: Ulamog the Infinite Gyre
Ulamog is a good example of a creature that wants you to have a Lightning Greaves in play. And it destroys whatever you want… even if it’s countered.
Sixth place: Kozilek, Butcher of Truth
Kozilek might not destroy anything you want, but it’s big, it gives you wonderful card advantage, and it can win the game by itself.
Fifth place: Mind’s Eye
Mind’s Eye is one of the best ways to get card advantage. Especially if you’re playing a multiplayer game.
Fourth place: Karn Liberated
Karn is one of the best ways to destroy permanents, and it can be very difficult fpr the opponents to destroy.
Third place: Wasteland
If any land becomes a problem, Wasteland is a great answer. It’s worth over $40 for a reason and it is likely to continue to go up in value similar to Mana Drain.
Second place: Strip Mine
Strip Mine is the ultimate land destruction card.
First place: Maze of Ith
Maze of Ith isn’t necessarily as important as Strip Mine, but it is one of the most powerful lands you can play in commander. You can not only use it to stop a creature from attacking you, but you can also use it to save one of your own attacking creatures from dying.
Other cards that should be in almost every deck include the following:
- Oblivion Stone
- All is Dust
- Nevinyrral’s Disk
- Umezawa’s Jitte
- Solemn Similucrum
