Top 10 Cards for Standard from New Phyrexia April 28, 2011

Here are my current favorite cards for Standard from New Phyrexia.

10. Due Respect

due respect

Due Respect reminds me of  Abeyance and I loved that card, but I’m not sure if it’s good enough to be played.

9. Vulshok Refugee

vulshok refugee

This might be worth playing in the sideboard of a mono red deck, but Sword of War and Peace could also be good.

8. Phyrexian Obliterator

phyrexian obliterator

Phyrexian Obliterator might not be played because it’s pretty much only playable in mono black, but it’s a really awesome card. They are tempting me to put non-Vampires in my vampire deck.

7. Geth’s Verdict

geth's verdict

Geth’s Verdict is like a worse Diabolic Edict. I expected this to be made soon, but it’s actually better than what I expected. We haven’t even seen a three cost version yet.

6. Mutagenic Growth

mutagenic growth

I love giant growths that don’t cost anything because aggro decks tap out every turn. This will be great with infect, and might even be decent in any other aggro deck.

5. Dismember

dismember

I’m not sure how good Dismember is overall, but it will give mono red a chance to kill Kor Firewalker and that makes me happy.

4. Furnace Scamp

furnace scamp

Furnace Scamp has pretty good odds of doing a lot of damage. It might not be as good as I think, but it’s decent. It would have been better as a goblin.

3. Karn Liberated

karn liberated

Karn Liberated can be played in any control deck, and probably will be. It can pretty much win the game by itself.

2. Batterskull

batterskull

Batterskull is going to be good with Stoneforge Mystic and will be played in Caw Blade.

1. Sword of War and Peace

sword of war and peace

Sword of Fire and Ice looks like it can be pretty powerful. It can not only be good in Kaw Blade, but probably in several other decks as well. If you’re playing mono red, you better not let this equip any creatures or you’re in big trouble.

Mental Misstep and Gitaxian Probe receive snub due to them being blue?

2. James - April 28, 2011

Mental Misstep is cool, but I don’t know how good it is. Gitaxian Probe seems weak to me.

3. 神の一手 - May 7, 2011

Mental Misstep is going to change legacy.

at 7 mana, Karn might be too much. might as well just play titans at 6 and win. Maybe if titans were not in the format Karn would make more of an impact (so yay block?)

Obliterator is a good card, but it doesn’t have a deck. BBBB kind of ruins it.

Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur is going to be a nice reanimation target.

Hex Parasite is the fun card that deals 2x damage to PWs.

Beast Within is an instant speed vindicate.

not sure about Birthing Pod yet, but Food Chain is a good card.

4. James - May 7, 2011

Yeah, Hex Parasite probably belongs on the list. I don’t know who will play it, but it might at least end up in a sideboard.

5. Geckopia - May 18, 2011

Don’t laugh. Ramp to Terra Stomper in 3, then drop Sword or Batterskull on it, and it’s game over.

6. Geckopia - May 18, 2011

Oh, and drop surge node with Chalice in a tezz control deck and watch turn blightsteel hard cast on turn 7 >:(
