Drafting Mirrodin Besieged Part 4: 5 More Cards Good in Metalcraft (Strategy & Tips) March 26, 2011

Posted by James in : all, strategy, limited, draft , trackback

Update (4/24/11): I added Ichor Wellspring to the list.

I have already discussed my 10 favorite common & uncommon cards to draft from Mirrodin Besieged and 5 other common and uncommon cards good in both metalcraft and infect. I will now discuss five more common and uncommon cards that I would want if I wanted to try to commit to making a metalcraft deck. (Actually, a few of these cards are actually decent in any non-infect deck anyway.)

5. Master’s Call

master's call

Master’s Call makes two artifacts creatures. That gives you something for your equipment to make bigger or help you get metalcraft. Also makes good surprise blockers against little infect creatures.

4. Skinwing

skinwing

Skinwing is a 2/2 flier, which is OK, but the fact that it can equip creatures after it dies is a good bonus.

3. Myr Sire

myr sire

Myr Sire is a heck of an annoying card to play against. It helps you get metalcraft, it’s good with equipment, and it’s a great chump blocker.

2. Ichor Wellspring

ichor wellspring

Ichor Wellspring can be great in a red deck with some sacrifice outlets, but it can be worth playing just to help you get metalcraft.

1. Viridian Claw

viridian claw

Viridian Claw is a decent equipment, but it’s actually quite good in infect as well as in metalcraft.

If you are committed to metalcraft, Rusted Relic is your man.

You like the red 3/1 double strike more than the white 2/2? X/1 creatures die to everything. The 2/2 seems more stable while you build to metalcraft.

And you forgot Myrsmith since that really floods the metalcraft gate.

This is about Mirrodin Besieged. I talked about Scars of Mirrodin metalcraft cards here: http://www.recoculous.com/2010/10/28/drafting-scars-of-alara-part-3-metalcraft-decks/

I don’t necessarily agree with what I posted there anymore, but Myrsmith is there.

I don’t really understand the idea of the article then. If the order was SSM, then it would make sense to say the best metalcraft cards. But the draft order is MSS so you don’t really want to commit yourself to metalcraft so early. I could see trying to go metalcraft if you ripped a Phyrexian Rebirth since that leaves an artifact creature.

I just don’t think you want to go into the draft thinking “I am going to play metalcraft”.

I think it can make a lot of sense to take some cards good in metalcraft early. Everything in this list is decent without metalcraft except Spiraling Dualist. Getting a metalcraft would be icing on the cake.

The dualist is pretty much crap without enough artifacts.
Silverskin Armor is a nice metalcraft equipment since it gives +1/+1 and makes the equipped creature an artifact. 2 artifacts for the price of one.

It seems if you wanted metalcraft it would be more useful than the myr sire, a card I am not impressed with. Ichor Wellspring is more exciting. Especially if you can get some Glint Hawks.

Ichor Wellspring might belong on this list, but I like Myr Sire quite a bit. Silverskin Armor is weak and sometimes you won’t have a creature to equip.

8. 神の一手 - April 2, 2011

any equipment has the “no creature to equip” problem. One advantage of the Silverskin Armor is that it is a scarf (protects from Go for the Throat).
