Top 10 Cards for Standard in Mirrodin Besieged January 27, 2011

I mentioned my 3 personal favorite cards from Mirrodin Besieged, but they aren’t necessarily going to be the most important cards in Standard. Here are the top 10 cards I think will be powerful (or highly useful) for Standard:

10. White Sun’s Zenith

white suns zenith

It’s the best Decree of Justice since Decree of Justice. I think this will do well in control decks. Notice that it is an instant. That part is very important.

9. Thrun the Last Troll

thrun the last troll

Thrun, the Last Troll is what Green has always wanted. It’s the ultimate Autumn Willow and Troll Ascetic melded into a single card. (Of course, I wish it was a giant motherly woman, like Autumn Willow.)

8. Slagstorm

Slagstorm is a decent pyroclasm that can hurt players instead. Not as good as Volcanic Fallout, but it’s still a great card.

7. Hero of Oxid Ridge

There’s not much in Mirrodin Besieged for Red Deck Wins, but this is a card I would consider playing.

6. Viridian Emissary

viridian emissary

Viridian Emissary is one of the best little creatures in green I’ve ever seen. It will often give you a two for one.

5. Sphere of the Suns

sphere of the suns

This is the sort of Mana Fixing I expect to see some decks use.

4. Lead the Stampede

lead the stampede

I want to draw 5 creatures off this card. I might try a 16 land build of Elves to try it out.

3. Inkmoth Nexus

It’s going to often be better than Blinkmoth Nexus. You can kill the opponent in 10 turns. That’s a little better in control decks than most aggro decks, but a lot of people will still stick them in their decks.

2. Go for the Throat

go for the throat

Finally, a black creature removal card that can take out any black creature for only 2 mana. This is the best Terror we’ve ever seen. I hope to see it again in M13. (We won’t need it in M12 because it will still be around anyway.)

1. Tezzeret Agent of Bolas

tezzeret agent of bolas

Tezzeret can be as good or better than Jace in the right deck. I think that’s enough to qualify it for the number one spot.

1. 神の一手 - January 28, 2011

With Tezzeret and Liquimetal Coating, you can turn a Planeswalker into a 5/5 artifact creature. Secret way to kill Planeswalkers or turn them into killing machines.

They consider Liquimetal Coating’s “target permanent” to be a mistake. If they were to do it again it would have some targetting restrictions.

I want to turn planeswalkers into creatures. That is a fun idea, and ruining liquidmetal coating is dumb.
