Standard Red Deck Wins (Post-Scars of Mirrodin) January 18, 2011

I don’t know what Red Deck Wins will look like after Mirrodin Besieged, but I finally got a new red deck that did pretty well. I was able to beat 5 players in a row, then I tied to make it into the top 8. I ended up tying for fourth place.

The last time I discussed Red Deck Wins was when Magic 2010 and Scars of Alara block were legal in standard, so many of the cards used are now gone. Although red is missing some powerful cards, the deck is still good. Here is what my deck looks like right now:

4 Memnite
4 Searing Blaze
4 Staggershock
4 Goblin Bushwacker
4 Zektar Shrine Expedition
4 Goblin Guide
4 Plated Geopede
3 Koth the Hammer
1 Arc Trail
4 Teetering Peaks
3 Smoldering Spires
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Arid Mesa
9 Mountain


3 Arc Trail
3 Goblin Ruinblaster
4 Burst Lightning
2 Cunning Sparkmage
2 Elemental Appeal
1 Devastating Summons

Possible Changes:

  1. Another Elemental Appeal could replace the main deck Arc Trail because it was a great card against slower decks (UW control, BUG, and RUG). Another Devastating Summons in the sideboard might also be a good idea. Cunning Sparkmage could be taken out of the sideboard.
  2. Goblin Gaveleer, Lifestaff, and Kuldotha Rebirth could be good together. You could switch them in and take out Staggershock, Zektar Shrine Expedition, Koth the Hammer, and 4 Mountains.


The idea of this deck is to kill the opponent as quickly as possible. I lost some games when I drew too many lands, but I rarely drew a Memnite with mana left open. You want to tap out every turn if possible. (Tapping out during the opponent’s turn is often preferable.)
