Will We Get New Basic Lands? October 15, 2010

Posted by James in : all, fake cards, speculation , trackback

I predicted a while back (on June 24th 2010) that we might eventually get new basic land cards. In particular, I predicted we would get new basic land cards sometime between Magic 2011 and 2019, such as Marsh:

marsh

Why would we get new basic land cards? Consider the following:

  1. There’s not always enough mana fixing available during a draft or sealed tournament. Common duals (or basic duals) could remedy that situation.
  2. We tend not to have enough mana fixing available for standard events. The core sets haven’t even had enemy colored dual lands. That highly limits the sorts of decks people can be making. Common duals (or basic duals) would help that situation quite a bit.

My friend, 神の一手, thought that my idea was over the top and said the following:

Marsh will never happen. They will not obsolete basic lands like that ever. When you have all your basic lands produce two colors, there will be unintended consequences.

I have three responses to that concern:

  1. These lands come into play tapped, which means that they aren’t very good. You probably wouldn’t want more than a couple in a deck. They therefore in no way “obsolete” basic lands.
  2. I don’t expect to see new basic lands anytime soon, but it is quite possible for them to exist within the next 8 or 9 years.
  3. In fact, I think it’s inevitable that they will eventually exist due to the power creep. To see where I am coming from, take a look at my Power Creep article.

golgari rot farmSome people have also suggested that common dual lands would never be made as one more reason to think that basic dual lands would never be made. However, Ravnica had common dual lands. For example, Golgari Rot Farm.

I am certain that we will see more common dual lands in the future, and something like Marsh will be made. I am less certain that basic duals will be made, but I am pretty sure that they will at some point. In fact, I made several predictions about Magic 2070 that would include a new basic land card:

valley magic 2070

I’m sure people don’t take this too seriously, but the point is merely that we don’t really know what is in store for us in the next 60 years — and I want to suggest that we have some reason to think that new basic land cards could be made within the next 8 or 9 years.

2 things with valley.

1) They haven’t wanted to make a new basic land type cause of domain (although that could change in the ridiculous future). Both in Invasion and Shards they threw out the idea of a new basic land type and it got shot down.

2) r/w is a cost, not a mana type. So it wouldn’t add anything to your mana pool.

Yes, Valley would obviously not exist until the “ridiculous future.” “R/W” is not one color of mana — it’s two colors of mana. It’s one mana that can be used as red or white. \The fact that future cards don’t work with the current rules of Magic is not only unsurprising, but it’s inevitable. New rules have to be made all the time.
