Drafting 2011 Part 6: Green August 3, 2010

Green doesn’t have the mind blowing power of the other colors, but it does have big creatures and mana fixing. The main idea of green is that you can play a couple other colors of your choice without worrying a lot about having mana problems. My top 10 favorite green common and uncommon cards are the following:

1. Cudgel Troll

cudgel troll

Regeneration is just about invincibility in Magic 2011. Certain removal spells, such as Pacifism, are still a threat, but other creatures won’t be much of a problem.

2. Garruk’s Packleader

garruk's packleader

Cudgel Troll is completely awesome, but I would consider taking a Garruk’s Packleader instead. Packleader is perfect for a deck with lots of creatures that help you draw cards.

3. Llanowar Elves

llanowar elves

Llanowar Elves are the best one casting cost common creature in Magic 2011 and just about every other core set ever made. It might not be worth taking as highly as I value it, but it is a personal favorite. It is a great card if you want to play some large creatures. An extra mana might be needed, and you might end up playing a large creature before the opponent is prepared for it.

4. Awakener Druid

awakener druid

Awakener Druid is your chance to attack for 4 by turn 4. Turn a Forest into a creature that you played earlier so that summoning sickness isn’t a problem.

5. Cultivate

Cultivate is the best mana fixing that we’ve seen in a core set for a long time.

6. Sylvan Ranger

sylvan ranger

Sylvan Ranger is also mana fixing, and it is pretty good with equipment.

7. Acidic Slime

acidic slime

Acidic Slime kills just about anything and it’s a perfect chump blocker.

8. Garruk’s Companion

garruk's companion

It’s pretty big and it has trample. These have come in handy and work great with equipment.

9. Yavimaya Wurm

yavimaya wurm

Yavamaya Wurm might be better than I think. Trample makes it much better than Craw Wurm, but I still prefer the old Craw Wurm artwork.

10. Spined Wurm

spined wurm

Spined Wurm is a big creature. That’s about all you need to know about it.

Green lost Overrun, which is a huge loss. It also lost Howl of the Night Pack and Deadly Recluse, which were very helpful. Garruk’s Packleader and Garruk’s Companions are great new green cards, but I’m not convinced that green is better than it was before. Green and White are the two colors that seem to be helped by Magic 2011 the least amount. Blue has been improved the most.

I think Sacred Wolf belongs on here, the troll shroud is amazing and makes it pretty efficient. It is the one creature that you can equip to and not much risk a two for one. I prefer it over Spined Wurm in the least, and probably over Garruk’s Companion as well.

2. James - August 3, 2010

I’m not super impressed with Sacred Wolf, but it might be better than Spined Wurm in some decks. Garruk’s Companion is better if you can get two green, but it’s not splashable.

3. Bob The Builder - August 4, 2010

the title on garruks packmaster is wrong it currently reads garruks companion

Green/white is blowing other colors away in draft. The other day I didn’t face one deck that was w/o green or white. The few who drafted red/black (because no one drafted those colors) were not a factor.

5. James - August 10, 2010

I beat everyone with a red/blue deck on Friday, and the Friday before that a mono black deck went undefeated. I’m not sure what you mean by “no one drafted red/black, but a few did.” If only one person is in black/red, then that person will end up with a very powerful deck.

i drafted red/white because i opened a chandra and was passed a fire servant. i ended up with another fire servant, ember hauler, pyromancer and burns. i went 0-2 against 2 green/white decks, and 2-0 against blue/white and blue/black. look, u probably can draft red and black and win a 2011 draft (but that hasn’t been my experience), and i think u vastly underrate green and white in this format.
