Drafting Magic 2011 Part 3: Blue July 16, 2010

Posted by James in : all, reviews, previews, strategy, tips, limited, draft , trackback

This is a list of the top 10 blue uncommon and common cards that I would want to get in draft.

1. Mind Control

mind control

Mind control is the best creature removal in the entire set.

2. Air Servant

air servant

Air Servant is a great replacement for Air Elemental. This is a great reason to splash blue.

3. Mana Leak

mana leak

Mana leak can stop just about everything early game, and it can stop expensive spells late game. It will almost always help.

4. Jace’s Engenuity

jace's ingenuity

This is the perfect card advantage spell.

5. Sleep

Sleep is incredibly powerful in an aggressive deck and will likely win you the game. It is best used in green-blue decks for that reason.

6. Aether Adept

aether adept

Aether Adept is not game winning like the above cards, but it is the next best thing blue has to offer. I would have rather got Man-o-War or a functional reprint, but this is still a great card.

7. Wall of Frost

wall of frost

Wall of Frost is a great wall, but it won’t help much against flying creatures. It is definitely a step down from Aether Adept.

8. Preordain

I look forward to playing Preordain. It’s not going to win you the game very often, but it can still be quite helpful.

9. Ice Cage

ice cage

I am no longer a big fan of Ice Cage. It is creature removal, but it’s not going to be good against every deck.

10. Scroll Thief

scroll thief

Scroll Thief is a step above Ophidian because it deals damage and draws cards at the same time, and it can win the game when the opponent sits back and takes a beating from it, but that will not happen very often. Scroll Thief barely make the cut to the top 10, and I’m not sure that it eve belongs on the list.

Scroll Thief might be a powerful card in blue-red with lots of removal. You don’t want anything to block it.

Blue has a milling theme that might be worth going for, but blue’s cards are so good that you probably won’t need it. Mana Leak, Jace’s Erasure, and Aether Adept are all new additions to blue that weren’t in M10. Levitation, Essence Scatter, Merfolk Looter, and Phantom Warrior are now out, but I think blue can survive quite well without them. Of course, I must admit that I will miss Merfolk Looter quite a bit.

1. 神の一手 - July 16, 2010

no love for Diminish? it is essentially blue creature removal turning a monster into a 1/1.

2. James - July 16, 2010

It is an OK card. It’s no more creature removal than Giant Growth is, though. The creature doesn’t even lose flying. What would I take off the list for it?

3. 神の一手 - July 16, 2010

most of the blue creatures you will be using have flying anyway. Or you use it post blockers.
