Post Zendikar Red Deck Wins November 9, 2009

I did well with Red Deck Wins in the past, but I haven’t got a chance to play it much recently. Red Deck Wins is a tempting deck to play considering that it doesn’t require all the expensive dual lands or fetch lands. Unfortunately, the best red decks probably do require 8 fetch lands. Let’s consider a red deck with fetch lands and another one without them.

With Fetch Lands

4 Burst Lightning
4 Goblin Guide
4 Plated Geopede
4 Zektar Shrine Expedition
4 Elemental Appeal
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Hellspark Elemental
4 Ball Lightning
4 Volcanic Fallout
2 Banefire
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Arid Mesa
14 Mountain

Without Fetch Lands

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Hellspark Elemental
4 Ball Lightning
4 Volcanic Fallout
4 Elemental Appeal
4 Siege Gang Commander
4 Earthquake
4 Seismic Strike
4 Pyroclasm
24 Mountain

The red deck with fetch lands is a very fast aggro deck. The red deck without them is slower and has a lot of mass removal.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the red cards found in Zendikar:

elemental appeal

Elemental Appeal isn’t as good as Ball Lightning, but it is a decent card in a deck that wants to overwhelm the opponent.

burst lightning

Burst Lightning is one of the best direct damage cards. It’s not as good as Lightning Bolt, but it’s a lot better than Shock was. It should be played in every mono red deck in standard.

goblin guide

Goblin Guide is one of the best one casting cost aggro creatures ever made. I’m not sure if it’s worth playing in Red Control, but it’s great in Red Deck Wins.

plated geopede

Plated Geopede is one of the most powerful creatures ever made… but you need fetch lands to get it to work. A deck full of fetch lands can get this to be a 5/5 creature for the two or three turns you need to kill the opponent.

zektar shrine expedition

With fetch lands Zektar Shrine Expedition can be better than Ball Lightning.

Although the deck lists above are based on my current ideas for red decks, there are other good red cards that you might also want to use, such as Magma Phoenix and Banefire.

I am selling a fairly inexpensive red deck on ebay.

maybe extended and standard are very different beasts, but one guy playing in a PT using a zoo deck ran geopede (with Steppe lynx) and was not pleased with it at all. he sided it out in almost every match. he did top 8 cause he was playing zoo with non-basic land hate, but he felt the geopede was the weakest link. I don’t know if that applies to standard or not.

Not sure why he had that experience. The card is ridiculous.

could just be the difference between extended and standard where 2 mana and 1 mana creatures are big.
