Unscrewed Part 10: Gym Socks of Ma ‘Rûf (Unglued 3) October 26, 2009

Posted by James in : all, fake cards , trackback

Ring of Ma ‘Ruf was a great card idea, but it has two problems. One, it’s too weak. Two, it was given an errata that said you can only get a card from your sideboard with it. (Why? It’s already too weak!)

Both of these issues were fixed with the new card I made for Unscrewed:

gym socks of ma ruf

Not only does Gym Socks of Ma Ruf let you get a card from outside your card pool, but it has an even more important ability: It lets you do something during deck construction in a limited event.

One new card theme I thought of was cards with abilities you could play outside the game. Even before you start playing. Gym Socks of Ma Ruf lets you live your wildest fantasy of playing whatever card you want in a draft or sealed event. Of course, there is a cost. (More specifically, you would need 60 cards in your deck during a limited event.) The cost of changing your minimum deck size is quite steep, but it might still be worth it. Especially considering you might get a couple Barren Farmland cards:

barren farmland

Barren Farmland doesn’t let you play spells outside the game, but it does let you play cards that are currently outside the game. This means that Barren Farmland can be played from your sideboard help you out when you get mana screwed.

The art on Gym Socks of Ma Ruf was an altered picture originally made by Boris Vallejo.

The artwork used for Barren Farmland is by Becky Joy and it is published under a Creative Commons Noncommercial No Creative Works License.

{5}, {T}, Exile Ring of Ma’rûf: The next time you would draw a card this turn, instead choose a card you own from outside the game and put it into your hand.

* 9/16/2007: The card you get may be the Ring of Ma’rûf you removed from the game.
* 9/16/2007: Ring of Ma’rûf works a little differently than the Wishes from others sets. Rather than letting you simply put a card into your hand from outside the game, this ability replaces your next draw. If you wouldn’t draw a card during the rest of the turn, the ability won’t have any effect.

You can get normally exiled cards just like wishes with it. The difference is that it is a replacement effect for a draw event instead of a spell that adds a card into your hand. Functionally, it is a Death Wish, but without the life loss. It just has a higher mana cost. But with artifact mana, like Cloudpost, it could be better. And with Academy Ruins it is easy to reuse.

If that errata existed, it has been since removed.

3. James - October 26, 2009

The errata is now just part of Tournament rules. The Wishes also say you get a card from outside the game. That doesn’t mean you can get cards outside of your sideboard. The wishes do not say “get a card from your sideboard.”

4. 神の一手 - October 27, 2009

but you can wish for something that was hit with with an O-ring or a Path to Exile. Same thing applies to the Ring.

Where in the tournament rules are you reading this?

5. 神の一手 - October 27, 2009

I think a card that works how wishes work in casual formats, where you can get any card you own, not a card in your starting sideboard/exiled zone.

3.5 Card Interpretation

The official text of the card is the Oracle™ text corresponding to the name of the card. Players have the right to request access to the official wording of a card only if they can uniquely identify that card, although the card does not necessarily have to be identified by name. That request will be honored if logistically possible.

Players may not use errors or omissions in Oracle to abuse the rules. The Head Judge is the final authority for card interpretations, and he or she may overrule the Oracle if an error is discovered.

Certain cards refer to “a card (or cards) you own from outside the game.” In tournament play, “a card you own from outside the game” is a card in that player’s sideboard.

In tournament play you can wish for exiled cards. Since the Ring has the same wording, it works the same way.

8. 神の一手 - October 28, 2009

It is the M2010 update that nerfed the Wishes and the Ring. Neither can get cards from the exiled zone since they are not outside the game.

What a waste. stupid WotC. stupid M2010

9. James - October 28, 2009

Everything was ruined in 2010 because they wanted to game to be more intuitive. “Exiled” is now just a second graveyard.

10. 神の一手 - October 29, 2009

Your card is how wishes work outside of tournaments, aside from the bonus deal during deck construction.

It is annoying that exiled is not outside of the game anymore. I guess it makes Extirpate and Path to Exile just that much better in tournament settings.

You should have posted my broken Mindslaver deck with the Barren Farmland. There are a lot of broken things you can do with a 20 card deck.

12. James - October 29, 2009

You can always post it here. I don’t want too much stuff in the post. I just wanted to get a simple point across.
