Red Deck Won Again August 4, 2009

Posted by James in : all , trackback

I won $150 last Saturday playing my red burn deck. I recently decided to try making my red burn deck as quick as possible, and right before the tournament I decided to throw Flamekin Bladewhirl into the deck.

Here’s what my deck currently looks like:

The Deck

4 Flamekin Bladewhirl
2 Lash Out
1 Volcanic Fallout
4 Boggart Ram-Gang
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Tattermuge Maniac
4 Flame Javelin
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Ball Lightning
4 Ashenmoor Gouger
4 Hellspark Elemental
21 Mountain

Sideboard

2 Lash Out
2 Everlasting Torment
3 Volcanic Fallout
4 Magma Spray
4 Vexing Shusher

My Experience

I played against a black/white/green deck, a Time Seive Combo Deck, a Jund deck, and two Faerie Decks. I only lost a match against a Faerie Deck. I intentionally drew the last match and tied for first place. (I think he was playing a green-black deck.)

I sideboarded out Tattermunge Maniac and Flamekin Bladewhirl against Faeries to put in Volcanic Fallout, Vexing Shusher, and more removal spells. So far removal seems to work very well against Faeries. I’m not sure how good Vexing Shusher is against Faeries. (I drew only Shushers one game.) I also sideboarded out Ball Lightning against Faerie decks that play Peppersmoke and added more removal to the deck.

I sideboarded out Tattermunge Maniac for Magma Spray against Kitchen Finks (Jund and black/white/green).

I sideboarded out 1 Lash Out and 1 Volcanic Fallout against the Time Sieve deck.

I do not know how well this deck does against Doran, Kithkin, or Black/White token decks. I suspect it would be quite challenging to beat those decks.

It should also be noted that there was a lot of luck involved. I played against Alex (and his Time Sieve deck) twice, and he drew horrible hands. Drawing what I needed helped beat all my opponents, and they didn’t draw what they needed.

I am selling a similar burn deck on ebay.

I’m gonna be playing in the 5K this weekend, except I’m gonna try out Red/Blue (Blue for Swans and Cryptic Command). How good was Flamekin Bladewhirl for you? That seems innovative, but a 2/1 for 1 is not exactly nuts in this format. Perhaps the advantage of being red lets it go the distance.

Also, have you playtested against 5C control? That seems to be pretty hot nowadays. Same goes for BR aggro.

I would like to play against 5CC or BR. I think I would have a good chance against those decks, but I didn’t play against them.

I don’t know how good my super-fast theme would work out against 5CC. I would take out Lash Out and Volcanic Fallout for Vexing Shushers. Not sure how good “fast red” is against 5CC because fallout hurts my deck more than usual. If I should be worried about 5CC, then there are some good possible sideboard cards that would be more aggressive and big, and the little creatures could be taken out. (Hell’s Thunder could be a good idea.)

The whole point of this deck is being very quick, so the Bladewhirl did very well. I also rarely played all my cards, so it wasn’t really a wasted card. I didn’t run out of steam, which is the main reason to avoid quick cards like that.

Hell’s Thunder does indeed seem like a good idea… would it be better than ball lightning? Increasing the elementals seems nice if you’re keeping the bladewhirls.

Also, BR has a very high win percentage vs 5C, but they have the advantage of Blightning and Anathemancer over you. Do you think your build has a significant advantage over this deck? Their mana requirements don’t seem particularly more stringent, but I haven’t seen your deck in action, so maybe there is some benefit to going mono red.

Ball Lightning is an Elemental, so Hell’s Thunder isn’t better with that consideration. Ball Lightning is really good. Not much more to say about it.

I don’t know much about BR. I like mono red, that’s why I play it. Mono red can be great against 5CC if made right. This particular build might not be optimal vs that deck. This build should be quite good vs BR and aggro decks in general.

I haven’t had that great of luck with Anathemancer because my decks tend to be so fast that I simply don’t have time to play it without a considerable cost. This might be one of the reasons I didn’t do so well last time I played in a standard event. (I splashed black for Anathemancer.)

There are many benefits of going mono red. Part of it is that I only play 21 lands. I played against some decks with more lands than me and the difference was often obvious. I might only draw 3 lands the whole game and never run out of ammo.

I did playtest against another mono red (or was it BR?) deck and did well because of having fewer lands.

23 land mono-red can be quite good with Demigod. Not sure which is better, but this worked well so far.

how did the faeries beat you?

7. James - August 17, 2010

I just remember that I was pretty unlucky against one of the Faerie decks, but I don’t remember all the detail.
