Drafting Shards of Alara (SCA) Walkthrough Part 2 May 13, 2009

Posted by James in : all , trackback

Pack one gave me very few green cards (Qasali Ambusher and Naturalize), and only one red card worth mentioning (Resounding Thunder). At this point I should stay flexible about what to pick. I am currently in Naya, but I could easily change to Bant or Esper.

Pick 1

yoke of the damned
ember weaver
scattershot archer
sylvan bounty
wild leotau
esper cormorants
quenchable fire
faerie mechanist
worldly counsel
lapse of certainty
scepter of dominance
fleshformer
grixis slavedriver
jhessian balmgiver

Out of all these cards, nothing is that great off-color. Wild Leotau and Scepter of Dominance look best.

Both of these are good cards, but both are very mana intensive. They are almost equally mana intensive, but Scepter of Dominance is slightly less so, and I am mainly in white.

First Pick: Scepter of Dominance

Second Pick

beacon behemoth
suicidal charge
vedalken outlander
dark temper
toxic iguanar
faerie mechanist
grixis illusionist
asha’s favor
rhox meditant
sigil of the empty throne
knotvine mystic
vagrant plowbeasts
paragon of the amesha

Of these cards Dark Temper, Vagrant Plowbeasts, and Rhox Meditant are the best. Nothing off-color is worth taking.

Dark Temper is one of the few creature removal spells in Conflux. Vagrant Plowbeasts can be a good win condition. Rhox Meditant is awesome in a green-white deck. Rhox Meditant might be the best for my deck overall, but I take Dark Temper because creature removal is hard to come by. It’s pretty likely that no one will take Vagrant Plowbeats or Rhox Meditant, so they might table.

Pick 2: Dark Temper

Pick 3

salvage slasher
sylvan bounty
vectis agents
canyon minotaur
fiery fall
wandering goblins
brackwater elemental
asha’s favor
darklit gargoyle
valiant guard
cumber stone
scornful aether-lich

Of these cards Fiery Fall is the only card that stands out. It is the first worthy mana fixing I got, which reinforces my suscpician that mana fixing is unreliable in Shards of Alara.

Third Pick: Fiery Fall

Pick Four

sedraxis alchemist
yoke of the damned
beacon behemoth
sylvan bounty
valeron outlander
toxic iguanar
brackwater elemental
gleam of resistance
font of mythos
dragonsoul knight
aerie mystics

Of these cards, I like the following best:

I am not a big fan of any of these cards, but they are the best of the pack in my colors. Nothing off-color is particularly good. I am not a big fan of Beacon Behemoth because vigalence with a 5/3 creature isn’t that great. I will go with Aerie Mystics to get my first flying creature.

Pick 4: Aerie Mystics

Pick Five

scattershot archer
goblin outlander
suicidal charge
maniacal rage
faerie mechanist
asha’s favor
lapse of certainty
mark of asylum
corrupted roots
view from above

Nothing that great here. I will take the Lapse of Certainty.

Fifth pick: Lapse of Certainty

Pick Six

rotting rats
wretched banquet
nacatl outlander
canyon minotaur
toxic iguanar
asha’s favor
countersquall
dragonsoul knight
scornful aether-litch

Of these cards I like Wretched Banquet and Dragonsoul Knight the best, but Wretched Banquet is in the wrong color.

Pick 6: Dragonsoul Knight

Pick Seven

tukatongue thallid
valeron outlander
kranioceros
maniacal rage
brackwater elemental
asha’s favor
cumber stone
view from above

Valeron Outlander and Kranioceros are both worth taking in this pack.

I usually don’t like two color creatures for two mana because I have a hard time drawing all the colors I need, so I will go with Kranioceros.

Seventh Pick: Kranioceros

Pick Eight

scattershot archer
molten frame
brackwater elemental
unsummon
aven trailblazer
manaforce mace
skyward eye prophets

Aven Trailblazer and Manaforce Mace are both pretty good cards. Molten Frame can be worth taking, but isn’t as good as the other two.

I haven’t had the best luck with Manaforce Mace, but Aven Trailblazer is a reliable flying creature.

Pick Eight: Aven Trailblazer

Pick Nine

scattershot archer
esper cormorants
quenchable fire
worldly counsel
lapse of certainty
jhessian balmgiver

My original pack comes back and not much is left. I will take a Lapse of Certainty.

Ninth pick: Lapse of Certainty

Pick Ten

suicidal charge
toxic iguanar
grixis illusionist
ahsa’s favor
sigil of the empty throne

Tenth Pick: Toxic Iguanar

Pick Eleven

salvage slasher
vectis agents
asha’s favor
scornful aether-lich

Eleventh Pick: Scornful Aether-Lich

Pick Twelve

valeron outlander
toxic iguanar
front of mythos

Twelfth Pick: Toxic Iguanar

Pick Thirteen

asha’s favor
corrupted roots

Thirteenth Pick: Corrupted Roots

Pick Fourteen

asha’s favor

My Deck So Far

Scepter of Dominance, Dark Temper, Fiery Fall, Aerie Mystics, 2x Lapse of Certainty,  Dragonsoul Knight, Kranioceros, Aven Trailblazer, and 2x Toxic Iguanar are all cards I will consider playing with. That is 11 new cards plus the original 8. I only need 4 more cards to be able to make a complete deck of 23 cards and 17 land.

Esper could have been an interesting choice with those 2 Cumber Stones.

I disagree with your second pick. Plowbeasts is what you should take. You don’t seem to have any intention on grabbing black permanents (unless you snatch the r/b borderpost). 3 mana for 2 damage is not that great.

2. James - May 14, 2009

Plowbeasts is also good and it might be better for my deck, but I still agree that in real life it has a very high chance of tabling. No one else will probably take it. (Of course I would have to watch signals closely to be sure.) I think I’ve got plowbeasts as nearly a last pick before because it is overlooked. Removal will not table.

3. Torgar - May 31, 2009

If you fully commit to naya in this deck, would knotvine mystic have not been a worthy second pick? A total net effect of “tap for 2″ just seems useful to me……..

4. James - May 31, 2009

Torgar, there are a couple reasons that I didn’t want Knotvine Mystic. One, I prefer to splash a color when possible. When you do that you can’t expect to get three mana of all three relevant colors early game. Knotvine Mystic is only good early game. Two, I don’t really like Knotvine Mystic. I don’t think I’ve ever played it. It might be better than I think, but I want my tap for two mana creature to be like Fyndhorn Elder. Three mana of different colors can be difficult to pull off. Wooly Thoctar is good even late game, but Knotvine Mystic isn’t.
