Drafting Conflux Part 6: 5 Colors February 6, 2009
Posted by James in : all, tips, limited, draft , trackback
Conflux has the same five themes that were in Shards of Alara, but they are now “side themes.” They are much less important. Additionally, there is one more side theme: 5 color decks, which include the most exciting and important cards in the set. The following are the best cards for 5 color decks:
The very best (bombs)
- Path to Exile (white)
- Noble Hierarch (rare)
- Martial Coup (rare)
- Banefire (rare)
- Meglonoth (rare)
Really good cards (first picks)
- Exploding Borders (red/green)
- Exotic Orchard (rare)
- Obelisk of Alara (rare)
- Blood Tyrant (rare)
- Charnelhoard Wurm (rare)
- Knight of the Reliquary (rare)
- Ethersworn Adjudicator (mythic rare)
Good cards (second picks)

- Dark Temper (red)
- Drag Down (black)

- Nicol Bolas (mythic rare)
Notable Commons and Uncommons
- Fusion Elemental (5 colors)
- Voices from the Void (black)
- Spore Burst (green)
- Matca Rioters (green)
- Might of Alara (green)
- Manaforce Mace (artifact)
- Kaleidostone (artifact)
- Armillary Sphere (artifact)
- Shard Convergence (green)
- Filigree Fracture (green)
- Ignite Disorder (red)
- Fiery Fall (red)
- Dragonsoul Knight (red)
- Fleshformer (black)
- Paragon of the Amesha (white)
- Gleam of Resistance (white)
Let’s take a closer look at some of the “notable” cards that areparticularly good cards for 5 color decks:
Mana Fixing

Armillary Sphers is one of my favorites because you can use it to search for 2 lands, which almost guarantees that you will get all 5 colors. Absorb Vis might also be good enough to play because it has landcycling, but it requires that you get black mana first, which can be difficult.
Domain

The best justification to decide to play five colors is domain. There are a lot of commons with domain. The green and black cards with tend to work best, and Manaforce Mace is a great threat.
Other Cards

The fact that these cards work well in a 5 color deck isn’t exactly a secret. These cards blatantly tell us to do it immediately.
Conclusion
Don’t make a deck that is equally all 5 colors. Green should be at least one of the main colors for a five color deck. Naya works best, but Jund and Band can also make good 5 color decks. I believe that 5 color decks are viable even if you only use one pack of Shards of Alara. However, a draft using three packs of Conflux will definately make 5 color decks worth playing.
