Ebay & Paypal: One payment is required for multiple items February 3, 2009

I just found out that there is a rule of paypal that you have to send every item in a separate package for every payment. A lot of buyers win several items and pay for them one at a time, and the seller is supposed to send each item in a separate package. This is an outrage for at least three reasons:

  1. Buyers want discounts and I send them shipping discounts by partially refunding their payments when they buy several items and pay for them separately.
  2. It requires you to reject the buyer’s payments and force them to pay for everything at once if they want a shipping discount.
  3. Many sellers require the “pay for it right away” option. If you use this option to make sure you get a payment but a buyer demands a shipping discount for winning multiple items, you will have to refund all of the payments. Then the buyer might decide not to pay after all, which would defeat the whole purpose of requiring an immediate payment in the first place!

I added this problem to my article Selling on Ebay: What you Really Need to Know.
