Drafting Conflux Part 5: Esper February 3, 2009

As usual, Esper (blue-white-black) does not play well with others. It requires an artifact theme to function, and it is the only shard that provides us with a source of artifacts. The following are the best cards in Conflux for Esper:
The very best (bombs)
- Path to Exile (white)
- Martial Coup (rare)
Really good cards (first picks)
- Exotic Orchard (rare)
- Obelisk of Alara (rare)
- Sphinx Summoner (rare)
- Ethersworn Adjudicator (mythic rare)
Good cards (second picks)
- Celestial Purge (white)
- Court Homunculus (white)
- Drag Down (black)
- Ancient Ziggurat (land)
- Rupture Spire (land)
- Extractor Demon (rare)
Notable Cards
- Kaleidostone (artifact)
- Armillary Sphere (artifact)
- Sedraxis Alchemist (black)
- Wretched Banquet (black)
- Gleam of Resistance (white)
- Faerie Mechanist (blue)
- Unsummon (blue)
- Esperzoa (blue)
- Controlled Instincts (blue)
- Parasitic Strix (blue)
Blue

Faerie Mechanist is my favorite esper card for draft because there are so few cards that reward you for playing artifacts, and this one rewards you pretty well.
Esperzoa can be a great card with Faerie Mechanist, but it is best used with Shards of Alara cards, like Sanctum Gargoyle.
Black

Sedraxis Alchemist is great in Esper because you will probably have a blue creature in play, but it doesn’t really do anything for the artifact theme. Wretched Banquet is one of the best removal spells you can play in Esper, but Drag Down is better.
White

Although Court Homunculus is the best addition to Esper in Conflux, it requires that you play white as one of your primary colors despite the fact that the other white cards aren’t very good in Esper.
Conclusion
This set doesn’t offer anything great for Esper except Court Homunculus, which is basically a 2/2 for 1 mana. Esper in Conflux is not worth playing unless you are also playing Shards of Alara. It can give you a few extra artifact creatures for your deck even though it doesn’t offer much on its own.
