Drafting Conflux Part 2: Bant January 31, 2009

Posted by James in : all, strategy, tips, limited, draft , 1 comment so far

Drafting Bant (white/green/blue) is almost exactly the same as drafting Naya. This is even more true now that exalted and the five-power theme make even less difference. Drafting is going to be much more about taking the best on-color cards and mana fixing. (more…)

Drafting Conflux Part 1: Naya January 30, 2009

Posted by James in : all, strategy, tips, limited, draft , 5comments

I have already mentioned the best cards you can draft in Conflux. White and red are still the best colors, and Naya is still the best 3-color deck you can draft, and it is certainly the best colors you will tend to get in Sealed. Now that you know what the best cards are, I still need to mention the other “mentionable” cards that you should look out for when nothing better can be found: (more…)

Successful Conflux Predictions January 29, 2009

Posted by James in : all, random , 4comments

I made six articles in which I attempted to predict some of the cards that would show up in Conflux. The first article was little more than wish fulfillment. However, I was victorious when it came to some of my other predictions: (more…)

Conflux Review Part 3: Sealed & Draft January 28, 2009

Posted by James in : all, reviews, previews, strategy, tips, limited, draft, sealed , 5comments

We want to know four things about Sealed and Draft tournaments: (1) What is the best color? (2) Will I get mana screwed? (3) What are the best cards we can hope to get? (4) Will Conflux make our experience more enjoyable? (more…)

Conflux Review Part 2: Top 10 Cards January 27, 2009

Posted by James in : all, reviews, previews, strategy, constructed, shards of alara block, standard, extended , add a comment

Although Shards of Alara had very few cards that could be used for either standard or extended, Conflux has at least 10 that might be good enough: (more…)

Conflux Review Part 1: Mana Fixing January 26, 2009

Posted by James in : all, reviews, previews , 2comments

The Conflux Spoiler is complete. Conflux has a three color theme in addition to a newly founded 5 color theme. It appears that Shards is “evolving” into a 5 color set. One problem. We were already getting mana screwed all the time when playing Shards of Alara drafts. How will we handle 5 colors? (more…)

Conflux Predictions Part 6: Leaked Artwork January 24, 2009

Posted by James in : all , 1 comment so far

Magicthegathering.com has leaked several images for Conflux cards. We already know what cards some of the art is for, but not all. It’s only a few days before we have the complete Conflux Spoiler, so this is our last chance to guess what cards will be made. I will take a look at two pieces of art that look particularly impressive and guess what they will be: (more…)

Conflux Predictions Part 5: Rare X Spells January 21, 2009

Posted by James in : all, fake cards, reviews, previews , 1 comment so far

We have seen three rare X spells in Conflux so far, and I suspect that we will have one for every color. We have not yet seen a green, blue, or black X spell. I have already predicted what the green one will be in the first Conflux Prediction article. And now I will predict what the blue and black ones might be like: (more…)

Conflux Predictions Part 4: A New Kicker January 20, 2009

Posted by James in : all, fake cards, reviews, previews , 2comments

I predict that one of the cycles of Conflux is a new kind of kicker cost: If you have a permanent of a certain color, then something neat happens. So far we have already seen a red, white, and blue card with this kind of a bonus. They all have a converted mana cost of 3, two of them are creatures, but one is not. I predict that there will be at least one green and one white card with this kind of a bonus (more…)

Conflux Predictions Part 3: 5 Color Pump January 19, 2009

Posted by James in : all, fake cards, reviews, previews , add a comment

After seeing Dragonsoul Knight and two other similar white and black cards, it is reasonable to assume that there will be a card like it in every color. These areĀ  the “five colors makes this big” creatures. I will attempt to predict what the blue and green “five colors makes this big” creatures will be.

So far none of these cards are particularly impressive, but if rumors are true, the green one might be very powerful. (more…)

Conflux Predictions Part 2: Domain January 18, 2009

Posted by James in : all, fake cards, reviews, previews , 2comments

The easiest way to make predictions about Conflux is to take a look at what cards have already been made and to take a look at the complete list of leaked card names. I predict that there will be at least the following four cycles: (more…)

Alara Reborn Predictions January 16, 2009

Posted by James in : all, fake cards , 3comments

What will we see three months from now? Alara Reborn is the third set in Alara block. It will be released on April 30, 2009. Now that we have a good picture of Conflux, we can speculate about what we will see in Alara Reborn. What is obvious is that it will have a 5 color theme. What is not as obvious is what particular cards will be in it. In particular, I hope there will be triple lands. (more…)

Conflux Predictions January 13, 2009

Posted by James in : all, fake cards , 6comments

I made up what two cards would do if they were from an alternate dimension in an article a couple days ago. However, we still don’t know what these cards will do. This is my chance to take a stab at guessing what they might end up being like. There are at least two new cycles (domain and X spells), and it is quite possible for these cards to be either of those. (more…)

Conflux: First Impressions January 11, 2009

Posted by James in : all, random, fake cards, theory, reviews, previews, design , 3comments

The next set of Alara block is Conflux and we already have a partial spoiler that is quickly growing. Prereleases will be held on January 31 - February 1, 2009., and it will be officially released on February 6, 2009. Although some people speculated that there would be “new” three color shards introduced in each set, this was already denied by Wizards of the Coast. So I thought every set of Shards block was going to be permanently about the same 3-color shards. However, there was a twist. The block is transforming into a 5-color theme. We still have the same shards, but we have a lot of “5 color deck” stuff as well. (more…)

Deck Types January 6, 2009

Posted by James in : all, random, design , 2comments

I have mentioned in a previous article that I don’t like Wizards of the Coast telling me “deck ideas.” I like to be encouraged to think of my own deck ideas. This is one of the whole points to collectible card games. If Wizards of the Coast is going to tell us what decks to play, they might as well just have us all play preconstructed decks.

There is one thing in particular about Magic: the Gathering that tells us that we can make our own deck ideas: There are many ways of winning. There are creature decks, mill decks, stasis decks, illusionary mask decks, burn decks, dredge decks, etc. Not only are there various win conditions, but sometimes we find other ways of winning. Stasis, for example, isn’t technically a win condition, but it provides a unique kind of advantage over the opponent. In contrast, other card games seem to provide pretty much just one kind of deck (creature decks). (more…)

Shards of Alara Part 8: Grixper January 2, 2009

Posted by James in : all, strategy, tips, limited, draft , 2comments

The most unusual Shards of Alara deck that I have seen was an Esper deck (blue-white-black) without an artifact theme. Instead it had an exalted/unearth theme. This might not seem to be worth mentioning, but it’s the only Esper deck that I’ve ever seen that got first place. I call this deck “Grixper.” (more…)
